Razorbacks D3 Hockey: Coach Betzold Leading a Rebound Year
The University of Arkansas Division 3 Razorbacks are heading into the 2025–26 season with a renewed sense of purpose under Head Coach and Director of Player Development Greg Betzold. Entering his second season behind the bench, Betzold is determined to turn last year’s challenges into fuel for a rebound campaign.
The Razorbacks finished the 2024–25 season with an 8–16 record, but Betzold believes the foundation has been set for bigger things this year. One of his first moves in the offseason was making changes to his staff—parting ways with assistant coach Elliot Stark and bringing on Bob Bonnett, a former junior player in British Columbia, whose fresh perspective has already made an impact.
“We’ve seen great progress both on and off the ice,” Betzold said. “Last year, we didn’t even have a locker room. It felt like a beer league team. Now, with a fully updated space, it feels like a professional team. That change alone has shifted the culture in a huge way.”
A Deeper, More Competitive Roster
The upgraded facilities aren’t the only improvement. Betzold emphasized that the team’s depth, particularly at forward, has dramatically improved. With key additions on defense as well, the Razorbacks expect to match up more competitively across the board.
“The depth of the team has greatly improved. Our forwards are deep, and with additions on defense, we are going to be able to compete at a high level this year,” Betzold said. “Last year, our focus was just making sure guys showed up on time. This year, our eyes are set on nationals.”
Building on Momentum
The D3 Razorbacks open their home slate on October 3rd against Dordt at The Jones Center in Springdale, followed by a rematch the next day. Other key home series include Dallas Baptist (October 24–25) and Missouri (November 21–22). Road trips will also provide tough tests, but Betzold sees them as opportunities for growth and preparation for postseason play.
“This program is moving in the right direction,” Betzold said. “We’re building something that players, fans, and the community can be proud of.”
